What's for sale?

This is a French, mid 20th Century soda siphon in a beautiful, sky blue glass. It is branded for the Brasserie La Bourgogne in Dijon, which is still open today and has been serving customers since 1904.

It really is a nice bottle with a large, oval logo etched onto the body:

BASSERIE LA BOURGOGNE
UBB
∙ DIJON ∙

We are assuming that UBB referes to the manufacturer of the siphon. Internally, the glass has a slightly twisted or writhen pattern, and the clear glass siphon tube is still present.

The cast metal cap and spout is also engraved with the name of the brasserie. Normally these tops are extremely difficult to remove, however this one isn't and can spin freely, which probably means it could never again be pressurised.

Siphons like this were used in cafés, bars and hotels around the world, particularly during the 20th century. They were reusable and had a hard life, and while the lack of damage on this example is surprising, you can see its use from the calcification stains on the inside.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In very good condition
  • Water staining on the inside
  • Lots of tiny air bubbles in the glass
  • A large bubble on the base
  • A couple of scuffs and either two small chips or exposed bubbles, low down on either side of the logo
  • The trigger is still sprung and can be operated
  • The top does not grip tightly anymore and can spin fairly freely
  • The glass tube is present and intact

What are the measurements?

  • 29cm high
  • 9cm base diameter
  • 1496 grams
