What's for sale?

This is an original, stoneware cream pot with blue top, from early 20th century Britain. It is the largest of the three sizes used for Buttercup cream.

This always a popular dairy, probably due to the strong blue and the picture of a cow on the front. The body is slightly more straight sided than other examples we have and the glaze is smoother with a finish that is more satin than full gloss.

These sorts of jars and pots were the standard way of retailing products and they were produced in large numbers. Each dairy would distinguish their brand by using different shapes, colours and graphics.

As these were mass-produced, they were roughly made and usually ended up being thrown away. This is one of the cleanest examples we've seen and is probably a later example.
