What's for sale?
This is a brown, salt glaze, stoneware teapot and is a signed, early design by Mary Rich, the highly regarded British potter.
This is a full size teapot (she was also known for making miniature teapots) and its form is low and wide with an arched cane handle, upturned spout and a usefully shaped lid.
The main features are the dark, impressed circles and sgraffito lines which are grouped together to suggest bunches of flowers. The top of the body and spout are decorated with faint lines in concentric circles and the handle loops have large, thumb pressed buttons where they meet the body.
The teapot has a lovely satin sheen to it. We can't tell if it has ever been used as a teapot but it looks practical and pours well. It's also a nice ornament and a good example of a talented potter's work.
Who made it and when?
This teapot carries an impressed "m" and was made by the British ceramist Mary Rich, who has been producing pottery from her studios in Cornwall since the early 1960s. This is probably an example of her work from the 1970s, when she was still mainly working with salt glaze. We have more about her here.
