What's for sale?

This is a green water jug, made by Sowerby from Vaseline glass, also known as uranium glass.  It's from their pattern 2550 Water Set, made in clear glass and also in four colours: amber, blue, flint and this green. Some colours are harder to find, which affects the price, but they're all sturdy, usable jugs.

The green is available in green uranium glass and normal green glass, probably based on the date of manufacture.

Uranium glass is so called because of the miniscule inclusion of Uranium Dioxide during manufacture. It's harmless and no more radioactive that than most other things in our homes; the glow under UV light is a chemical reaction.

This jug's fluorescence has been tested under UV light, as shown in our photographs.

Who made it and when?

It was made by Sowerbys' Ellison Glass Works Limited of Gateshead in the 1950s (see the catalogue reproduction at 20th Century Glass).
