A WMF Art Nouveau calling card tray for sale
This is a polished pewter visiting card tray from around 1900. It features a highly representative, Art Nouveau or Jugendstil design of a young woman with flowing hair, surrounded by flowers and looking toward the horizon and a rising sun, a symbol of hope.
It's a very three dimensional object; the two large, central flowers have been made separately and attached via a nut and bolt from beneath.
It was made by the Austrian company AK & CIE (Albert Köhler u. Cie), who were bought in 1900 by the larger and now more famous German company WMF.
The tray is listed in the 1906 WMF catalogue as "No. 194 Visiting Card Tray". However, the maker's mark on this example is a small "A.K. & CIe" (on the underneath, at the end of her hair, to the right of the large flowers). WMF continued to market in Austria under Albert Köhler's name so precise dating is difficult.
What condition is it in?
- Second-hand
- In fair to good condition and certainly good for it's age
- This has clearly been used over the years and has many shallow scratches and marks
- There are grazes and tiny nicks on the edges
- The back is tarnished all over and has many scratches
- There are two more noticeable scratches, one to the right of her nose and a long one which extends from below her chin, across the suns rays to the edge
