What's for sale?

This is a signed, handmade, studio pottery plate from the Porthmadog Pottery of North West Wales. It has a beautiful, swirling design in blue and yellow.

It's a round plate, with a high-gloss finish on the upper side and a matt finish on the other.

The slightly-ribbed rim has been wiped with a light-brown glaze to create a radiating pattern of lines around it. The same brown glaze has been used to create a swirling pattern in the centre, around which a band of radiating blue strokes has been applied. It's an interesting and attractive design.

Who made it and when?

It is signed by A. Williams, who was an artist with the Porthmadog Pottery based in Gwynedd, North West Wales. The pottery operated from the basement of Craft Centre Cymru, which occupied the Snowdon Mill (originally a steam-powered flour mill) from the 1960s, possibly up until the early 2000s. The maker's mark on the underneath reads:

  • A.Williams (by hand)
  • Porthmadog Cymru
  • (A ship)
  • Porthmadog Wales
  • 56

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In good condition
  • No chips or cracks
  • There is a firing fault on the edge of the blue band
  • There are tiny scratches on the inner rim, probably from where another plate has been placed upon it
  • There are fingerprints and smudges on the underside

What are the measurements?

  • 2.5cm high (1 inch)
  • 25cm in diameter (just under 10 inches)
  • 594 grams
