 What's for sale?

This is an Art Deco style, desktop perpetual calendar in chrome-plated metal, with the mechanical parts in an early, yellow plastic. It is  mounted on a slim, pale-coloured marble base with felt underside.

It is a French language calendar, so days are labelled LUNDI, MARDI, MERCREDI, etc and months JANVIER, FÉVRIER, MARS etc.

The two small, protruding rollers at each end change the date numbers, while the the day and month are changed by two larger, plastic discs which cover each end.

It was probably made some time during the 1930s to 1950s. The mechanism appears to be slightly sprung which feels more accurate to use than the free-spinning versions we have tried.

Please note that while we refer to the generic term Bakelite, it is probably another type of early plastic.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • Fully operational and in good condition
  • The marble is intact and undamaged
  • The 1 and 2 in the tens column are faded
  • The days and months are clear
  • There is a stain around MARDI and MERCREDI
  • There is a crack on the right-hand disc used for the months, but the operation is unaffected

What are the measurements?

  • 4.5cm high (1.75 inches)
  • 15cm long (just under 6 inches)
  • 5cm wide across the base (2 inches)
  • 290 grams
