What's for sale?

This is a handmade, copper and brass claret jug from the early 20th century. The handle and finial are brass, the body and lid are copper and lined with tin.

Around the top of the body is an embossed pattern of grapes and leaves and on one side an engraved dedication "Les Artistes Lyriques A Darragon" and "Buffalo 23 Aout 1909" ("The Singers of Darragon. Buffalo, 23 August 1909"). Did they take it with them as a gift, or was it awarded to them? And was it Buffalo, New York or somewhere in Canada? We don't know, but the inscription probably makes this a unique piece.

It's an attractive piece with a nice combination of colours, an elegant, Art Nouveau handle and it's still in fairly good condition.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In fair to good condition
  • The finial has been re-soldered
  • As usual there are a few dents, most noticeably on the base
  • It has been heavily polished and there are a lot of fine scratches all over
  • The patina is varied
  • The thumb lift, hinge and lid work well

What are the measurements?

  • 30.5cm high
  • 17cm from spout to handle
  • 12.5cm in diameter at the base
  • 516 grams
