Buttercup Dairy Small Cream Pot

What's for sale?

This is a small earthenware pot for retailing cream. In Britain, pots like these were produced in large numbers for dairies until the 1930s. They came in lots of shapes and sizes and each dairy would have it's own branding.

This is the smallest of the three sizes used for Buttercup Cream. Buttercup is one of the more collectable pots due to the beautiful blues used for the top and in the picture of a milk maid and cow.

These were crudely made, so nearly all will have varying degrees of firing faults, rough patches and smudged colouring. And because they were made to throw away, most of those around today will have been recovered from old refuse tips.

What condition is it in?

• Second-hand
• In fair to good condition
• The body is undamaged and there are no major firing faults
• There are patches where the blue glaze hasn't taken to the clay
• The lettering and graphic are clear and bright

• 8cm high (3 inches)
• 5cm in diameter (2 inches)
• 127 grams
