What's for sale?

This is a elegant, signed bib necklace, on a choker length chain, by the American costume jewellery maker Monet.

It's a strong, bright, statement design in a gold-coloured alloy, comprising six basse taille crescents in-filled with green enamel.

The chain is about 18cm (7 inches) on each side and is secured by a shepherd hook fastener.

The French phrase 'basse taille' means low cut, referring to the technique of recessing shapes and panels, sometimes with an engraved surface, and filling them with translucent enamel.

Who made it and when?

The rear of the bottom crescent is the embossed "© Monet". Monet was an American costume jewellery maker, founded in 1930's New York by the Chernow brothers. Signatures with the copyright symbol come after 1955 and we think the style dates it to the 1970s or 1980s.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In very good condition

What are the measurements?

  • 6.5cm high x 9.5cm wide pendant (2.5 x 3.75 inches)
  • Each chain is 18cm long (7 inches)
