What's for sale?

This is a medium sized, salt-glazed jug by the collectable British potter Jane Hamlyn. It's nicely shaped and the textured surface has a beautiful blend of blues, greens and browns. As with all her work, attention has been paid to the smallest detail.

It has a slender waist with a spiral pattern of colours and inscribed markings beneath. The upper body is mainly blue with a pattern of diagonal, rouletted marks. The handle is in green and brown and has been given the appearance of twisted rope. Finally the smooth, ribbed interior has a beautiful graduation from blue to green.

Salt glaze is a finish produced by the addition of salt and other ingredients into the kiln during the high temperature part of the firing. The technique requires a lot of skill and Jane Hamlyn is an expert. Her work is widely exhibited and is quite collectable.

Who made it and when?

It was made by the highly regarded, British potter Jane Hamlyn. She has been producing pottery from her South Yorkshire studio since 1975 and has an annual exhibition every June. Her "JH" mark is found near the base and below the handle.
