What's for sale?

This is a fantastic, salt-glazed watering can in blue and brown tones. It's beautifully shaped and textured, with a large, looping handle and elongated spout.

It was made by the British artist Ian Gregory, Fellow of the Crafts Potters Association. He's mastered many techniques including salt glaze, raku and paper clay and is also an established oil painter, sculptor and kiln builder.

Salt glaze is produced by adding salt and sometimes other minerals into the kiln during the high temperature part of the firing. The vapour this creates interacts with the clay to produce a hard, high-gloss glaze with an orange peel like texture as seen here.

Who made it and when?

It was made by British artist Ian Gregory. Ian's signature mark, "IG" within a circle, is at the handle base.  A lot of his salt glaze pottery was produced in the 1960s and 1970s, but we think this could be later.
