A tremendous, large, vintage, earthenware, promotional water jug for the French pastis brand PEC 45. Second-hand.
What's for sale?
This is a large, vintage, earthenware water jug, branded for the French pastis brand PEC 45. It's one of the rarer pastis jugs, in dark green with embossed lettering in white.
From the 1930s on, pastis became a subsitute for absinthe. Mixed with water, it has a subtle aniseed flavour and is often drunk as an aperitif. Pastis PEC (Picon et Compagnie) was founded in 1951 in the Sète region of Southern France. It was a huge success and became known as "Le Pastis Impecc" (impeccable is the same in French and English).
In 1978 the company was sold to the Remy-Contreaux group, and the production of Pastis PEC ceased.
Who made it?
This was made by the famous Moulin des Loups pottery at their Saint-Amand-Orchies-Hamage factory at Orchies in Northern France. The printed maker's marks on the base is almost illegible but reads:
- "modèle déposé - sevres" - the standard French "registered design" stamp, also referencing the Sevres pottery region
- The Moulin des Loups windmill
What condition is it in?
- Second-hand
- In fair condition - there are a lot of firing faults, but the colour and logo are very good
- There are areas of crazing, notably near the bottom and near the mouth at the top
- Many pin holes (small firing faults) on the handle and around the spout and mouth
- Two pinholes have broken off on the mouth of the jug, looking similar to chips
What are the measurements?
- 20cm high (about 8 inches)
- 15.5cm across (about 6 inches)
- 21cm from spout to handle (about 8.25 inches)
- 905 grams
