Tagua Nut Bird Bottle Stopper With Pourer

What's for sale?

This is a handmade bottle stopper and pourer, made in the form of a little bird using a tagua nut, a plastic head and beak and glass eyes. It was probably made during the 1930s to 1950s.

The plastic parts are made from an early type of phenolic resin, similar to Bakelite. The pourer is threaded through the cork and the nut and the bird's head comes off to reveal the top of the pourer.

Tagua nuts come from the South American rain forest and are also known as ivory palms, ivory nut palms, vegetable ivory and eco ivory.

• The pourer is corroded
• The edges of the cork inside the head is damaged

• 10cm high (4 inches)
• 6cm at widest point (just over 2.25 inches)
• 58 grams
