What's for sale?

This is an original, stoneware cream pot with blue top, from early 20th century Britain. Pots and jars like these were the standard means for retailing products and were produced in large numbers.

Like today, each dairy would try and distinguish their brand by different shapes, colours and graphics.

This example is from the early 20th century, and is the largest of the three sizes used for Buttercup Cream. It's always a popular dairy, due to the shades of blue used for the top and in the picture of milkmaid and cow.

They were mass-produced, roughly made and usually ended up in rubbish tips. Most will have firing faults, rough patches, imperfect lettering and some may have damage from being thrown away.

What condition is it in?

  • Second-hand
  • In fair to good condition
  • The body is undamaged and there are no faults
  • The top is evenly coloured
  • The picture and larger lettering are clear
  • The smaller lettering is legible
  • There's a lot of crazing and staining

What are the measurements?

  • 12cm high (5 inches)
  • 7.5cm in diameter (3 inches)
  • 379 grams
